The North Sea is a busy place. As well as nature conservation, it is the site of heavy shipping traffic, fisheries activity and gas and oil extraction. Cables and pipelines are laid and maintained, sand is dredged and military use is made of the sea.
And let’s not forget coastal protection, seaport development and the construction of wind farms. The interests of all these stakeholders are taken into consideration when any protected Natura 2000 site is created in the North Sea.
