North Sea Coastal Zone 2

Print E-mail

North Sea Coastal Zone 2 consists of ‘sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time, subtype North Sea Coastal Zone’.

North Sea Coastal Zone 2 has not yet been designated. It is a marine site of approx. 1,240 km2. It forms an expansion of North Sea Coastal Zone 1. It extends this zone to a water depth of 20 m and, to the south, from Petten to Bergen aan Zee, between the high water line and the 20-m depth line.

Similarly, the existing Birds Directive site or SPA has been extended southwards by approx. 256 km2. As a result, it now coincides – thanks in part to a boundary correction – with the Habitat Directive site or SAC.

The Habitat Directive species are harbour porpoise, grey seal and harbour seal and the fish species sea lamprey, river lamprey, allis shad and twaite shad.

The Birds Directive species are cormorant, shelduck, ringed plover, red-backed sandpiper, sanderling, little gull, little tern, eider, red knot, avocet, black-throated diver, red-throated diver, bar-tailed godwit, oystercatcher, turnstone, Kentish plover, scaup, curlew, grey plover and black scoter.
